get results by 'finding your why'

Updated: Apr 29, 2019

Whether you are just starting out on your fitness journey or striving to achieve the goals you set out, finding your why is essential to help you get to where you want to be. Finding your why is what some fitness professionals get their clients to do to develop a real meaningful reason to achieving their goals. Most people set a goal and say they want to lose weight, get stronger or look more toned. However, its not often that people question why they want to achieve their goals. By deeply thinking about why you want to change will empower you to do so.

imagine this

Let’s imagine a scenario where you have two people, the first person has a goal to lose 10kg in 12 weeks’ time for their holiday as they want to look better in a swimsuit while on the beach. The second person has the same goal but when questioned why they want to lose weight, they explain that they are really depressed about how they look and have lost all confidence in their appearance. To add to this, they are worried about their health and want to get fitter. They also want to take their kids to the park and play sports with them without feeling embarrassed or ashamed. Which one of these two people do you think is more likely to achieve their goals?

Understanding your why is going to help you during the hardest parts of your journey, when people offer you a slice of cake at work, when you feel too tired to cook, when your friends ask you to come to the pub etc. All these things will take will-power and when you have a meaningful reason to achieve your goals its so much easier to stay on track.

how my why has helped me

My why is that I am passionate about helping others lose fat and feel good about themselves. My why is the glue that keeps everything together and aids my progression as a trainer in a tough industry. I get great satisfaction from helping people achieve their goals, so this allows me to work hard even when I’m not in the mood. It's what gets me out of bed every morning at 5am because I love what I do. My why encourages me to work hard to help others when I could sit on the sofa playing my Xbox or binge on a Netflix series.

your turn

If you are someone who hasn’t really thought about why you want to achieve your goals, please take 10 minutes to write down what you want to achieve and why. Do this and the results you visualise will start to come true!
